Back stitch

In this stitch  first a straight stitch is worked and then the needle is inserted in the cloth at a regular interval behind the first stitch and brought out in front of the first stitch at the same interval. This process is continued to get a straight line.
There can be variations in this stitch by weaving the contrast colour thread around back stitch. This is called Threaded back stitch.
The contrast colour thread can also be woven up and down consecutive stitches to get Whipped back stitch.
I have done all these variations in my sample below.

Variations of chain stitch --2

              Reverse chain stitch
             ------------------------------------
This stitch is worked in reverse manner, hence it is worked from top to bottom of the line. First a normal stitch is worked, then the needle is inserted into the cloth and brought up the cloth at the same interval below the first stitch. Then the needle is inserted through the first chain stitch without piercing the cloth and brought back to the starting point of the second stitch.

This stitch is worked from top to bottom of the line drawn.
First the thread is fixed on the cloth.

Then a normal chain stitch is worked. Put the needle into the cloth below the first stitch.

Then the needle is pulled out.

Pass  the needle through the first stitch without passing through the cloth from right to left.

Displaying IMG_20170611_173938.jpg

Then insert the needle through the point where the needle is inserted for the second stitch.

Displaying IMG_20170611_174128.jpg

Now bring the needle out of the cloth at the same interval below the second stitch.

Displaying IMG_20170611_174356.jpg

If we continue in the same procedure we get the reverse chain stitch. It looks like regular chain stitch but is worked in reverse.

Detatched chain stitch
-----------------------------------------
In this stitch an individual chain stitch is stitched. Many such individual stitches are stitch he'd beside each other to fill the design.

First the thread is fixed at a point.

Displaying IMG_20170630_221223.jpg

Then a normal chain is worked by inserting the needle for a chain.

Displaying IMG_20170630_221004.jpg

Then the thread is wound round the needle .

Displaying IMG_20170630_221601.jpg

Then the needle is pulled out and inserted at the next point where the chain is drawn.

Displaying IMG_20170630_221825.jpg

This way the entire design is worked getting individual chains.Hence the name Detatched chain.

This is the complete design where i have also used stem stitch and bullion knot.

I have also used it in my daughter' s dress as shown below.

Here is the closeup of the Detatched chain in  the design.

Variations of chain stitch--1

Chain stitch is the most common stitch that is generally used to  decorate any design. In this cloth I have tried some variations.

Chain stitch is usually worked by winding the thread around the needle after inserting the needle through the cloth  and bringing out the needle at a regular intervals.

 Open chain
--------------------
In this stitch the needle is inserted diagonally and the thread is wound around the needle, then the needle is inserted in the cloth with the stitch around the needle  in such a  manner that the stitch looks like a box and the needle is brought out diagonally as in the first stitch . This can be worked to fill the design also .

Below is a step by step representation of the stitch. Draw two parallel lines to do the stitch.
First as always the thread is fixed on the cloth in the left side line. Then pierce the needle from the right side line in a diagonal manner and bring it out on the left side. Wind the thread around the needle.

Displaying IMG_20170611_172107.jpg
When we pull the needle out of the cloth  do not pull too much.
Let it be a little  loose.

Displaying IMG_20170611_172148.jpg
When we start the next stitch by piercing the needle again on right side we must take care to pierce the cloth in such a way that the first stitch gets fastened.
Then move the needle in a diagonal manner again to the left side of the line.

Displaying IMG_20170611_172229.jpg

Again wind the thread around the needle and pull the needle out to get the second stitch. Repeat this procedure.

Displaying IMG_20170611_172435.jpg

As the stitch proceeds we get a series of square stitches.

Displaying IMG_20170611_172751.jpg

It actually looks like a ladder of stitches.

Cable chain
---------------------
In this stitch the thread is wound around the needle and then pierced through the cloth just like the normal chain stitch and the needle is brought out at a space away from the stitch . This process is repeated creating a cable like look.

I have tried to bring a pictoral explanation below.

Displaying IMG_20170611_165714.jpg

The stitch starts by first fixing the thread on the line. Then wind the thread around the needle from right to left and pierce the needle for a normal length leaving a gap from the starting point.

Displaying IMG_20170611_165819.jpg

As you can see   I have inserted the needle into the cloth and brought it out and wound the thread around the needle .

Displaying IMG_20170611_165909.jpg

Since we have left a gap between the starting point and the actual stitch it looks like a cable.

Displaying IMG_20170611_170002.jpg

The second stitch looks like this.
Displaying IMG_20170611_170441.jpg

When we finish the stitch we get a cabled looking version of the stitch, thus the name.

Magic chain
----------------------
In this stitch we can use two contrasting colours threads to work the normal chain stitch  by using the two colours alternatively .

 Half chain
-------------------
In this stitch the normal stitch is worked using half the length of the usual chain stitch . This can be worked with by winding the thread around the needle from left to right or right to left .

THis can be done by winding the thread from  left to right as shown below.
Displaying IMG_20170611_170842.jpg

The thread is fixed on the line.
Displaying IMG_20170611_171316.jpg

After leaving a gap from the starting point the needle moves through the cloth and the thread is wound from left to the right.
Displaying IMG_20170611_171356.jpg

This is how the stitch will look facing right.

Displaying IMG_20170611_171450.jpg

Again for the next stitch leave a gap with your thread at your left and move the needle through the cloth.

Displaying IMG_20170611_171755.jpg

Thus you get the half chain.

Now I will show you how this can be worked in the opposite direction also.
Displaying IMG_20170611_170842.jpg
Firdt the thread is fixed on the cloth.

Displaying IMG_20170611_170954.jpg

Then after a gap bring the needle through the cloth  keeping the thread to its right. Move the thread around the needle from right to left.

Displaying IMG_20170611_171033.jpg

Then pull the needle out of cloth to get a stitch facing left.

Displaying IMG_20170611_171120.jpg

As we repeat this process we get a cute set ofstitches.

Chain stitch

Chain  stitch is one of my favorite stitches . As seen in the above design I have worked this stitch in the outline of the design with one thread . It can also used to fill the design. In this stitch we start by making a straight stitch and wind the thread around the needle before pulling the needle to make the stitch.

Displaying IMG_20170210_133510.jpg
At first the thread is fixed on the cloth. Then the needle is inserted at the stating point and brought out at a regular interval .This interval will depend on the size of the chain. Then the thread is wound around the needle.

Displaying IMG_20170210_135446.jpg

when we pull out the needle we get a chain.
This pattern is followed in the same procedure to make a series of chain stitches.

Displaying IMG_20170210_135505.jpg
As we repeat the procedure we get a row of beautiful chain stitch.

Stem stitch

Stem stitch is the next simple stitch that is generally used to decorate stems of plants  hence the name of the stitch. It is basically an outline stitch.
It is generally done on a line from top to bottom. The needle is inserted in the cloth at an angle of the line drawn. This as angular deflection can be either towards the left or to the right.

The thread is first affixed on the top of the line drawn.the stitch is always worked from top to bottom of the line.

Displaying IMG_20170208_140850.jpg

Then the needle is pierced into the cloth from a point below the starting point with a slight tilt to the left.
Displaying IMG_20170208_141016.jpg

This is how it will look once a few stitches are done.
 Displaying IMG_20170208_141210.jpg

Here is a clear version of how the stem stitch looks when worked from right to left.

Now we will see how the stitch looks when inclined to the  right.Just as before the thread is first fixed on the cloth.

Displaying IMG_20170611_155025.jpg
Displaying IMG_20170611_154814.jpg

Here in the second step the needle is pierced into the cloth from left to right .

Displaying IMG_20170611_154814.jpg

This is how the second stitch will look like.
Displaying IMG_20170611_154958.jpg

Now we can see that we have series of stem stitch with an angular tilt towards the right.

In this picture the stem stitch is worked keeping the needle inclined to the left.

In the above picture the needle is inclined to the right .

Threaded stem stitch
In this variation the original outline is done using stem stitch . Then a contrast colourway thread is woven around the stem stitch without moving the needle through the cloth. An example of shown below.
Displaying IMG_20170208_135503.jpg

At  first a regular row of stem stitch is worked along the line.

Displaying IMG_20170210_125849.jpg

As you can see in the above picture the contrast coloured thread is wound around the existing stitch without piercing the cloth.

Displaying IMG_20170210_125817.jpg
As you proceed along the whole length of the stem stich a different look comes up with two thread intertwined with each other.

Displaying IMG_20170210_130537.jpg

This is the final output of Whipped stem stitch.

Here is a parrot filled using stem stitch .
